Powdered chlorotrifluoroethylene polymer is compressed at room temperature into thin tablets prior to extrusion. The tablets of circular cross section preferably have a diameter to thickness rates of at least 5 to 1, although a thickness of about 50-100 mm. and a diameter of 200-300 mm. is acceptable. Low density chlorotrifluoroethylene polymer is comminuted to a fine powder by passing through a fine sieve and is then compressed to form tablets of the above dimensions. These are then fed to a heated screw extruder and the material is extruded as a coating for wire; the high-temperature insulating properties of the material having deteriorated little during the above process. In a modification a suitable pigment is added to the chlorotrifluoroethylene at the comminuting stage and a uniform dispersion therein is produced.
