<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wear suppressing method for an exhaust valve or air supply valve of an internal combustion engine capable of reducing the wear of a valve head part by forming thin films sustaining long-time service on the surfaces of the valve seat and the valve head part arranged removable from a valve seat. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the wear suppressing method for the exhaust valve or air supply valve of the internal combustion engine having the valve head part 2 positioned at the end of a valve stem reciprocated by a cam rotated by the crankshaft of the engine and the valve seat 10 set removably on a sliding surface provided at the periphery of the valve head part, a carbon-containing thin film is formed on the sliding surface of the valve head part and the valve head part, the value head formed with the thin film is attached and detached to/from the valve seat so as to open and close the gas passage, wherein the method includes a process in which a highly-viscous liquid having a lower firing temperature than the combustion space temperature of the gas passage is applied to the sliding surface of the valve head part and a residue attachment process in which the highly-viscous liquid applied to the sliding surface becomes residues from combustion owing to a trial operation prior to the regular operation to result in attachment to the sliding surface of the valve head part, whereby the residues from combustion are attached to the sliding surface of the valve head part.
