<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping force variable damper improving ride comfort by continuously varying damping force, having a simple structure, and reducing frictional resistance during sliding. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The damping force variable damper 1 used for a suspension system of a vehicle and varying damping force is provided with: a cylinder 2 inside of which is filled with fluid; a piston rod 3 provided to penetrate through one end of the cylinder 2; a sliding piston 4 provided within the cylinder 2 so as to enable relative displacement with respect to the piston rod 3 and partitioning inside of the cylinder 2 to form operation chambers (21, 22); communication passages (4a, 4b) formed in the sliding piston 4 and communicating the operation chambers (21, 22) with each other; valves (41, 42) for opening/closing the communication passages (4a, 4b); and a valve control means 5 for controlling the opening/closing state of the valves (41, 42) in accordance with the displacement amount of the sliding piston 4.
