<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure pump ensuring the resistance of a pressure control valve to foreign matter. <P>SOLUTION: The high pressure pump 11 includes: a pressurizing chamber 14 for pressurizing fuel by the reciprocating movement of a plunger 31; a discharge passage 19 for discharging high pressure fuel; and a return passage 20 for communicating between the discharge passage 19 and the pressurizing chamber 14. A relief valve 80 opens and closes the return passage 20 under the abnormal high pressure. A constant residual pressure valve 90 provided in an inner passage 821 formed inside a relief valve needle 82 opens and closes the inner passage 821 under the constant residual pressure. A filter 40 provided in a recessed groove 824 at the end of the relief valve needle 82 formed by enlarging the diameter of the inner passage 821 removes foreign matter in the fuel flowing toward a ball 91 of the constant residual pressure valve.
