In the catalytic conversion of a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and steam to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen, in which carbon monoxide-containing gas is humidified by spraying with hot water in excess which is thereby cooled, and the converted gas is cooled and dehumidified by spraying with the cooled water which is thereby reheated and thereafter returned to the humidifying stage, the excess cooled water from the humidifying stage is further cooled before being passed to the dehumidifying stage by being passed to the humidifying stage of one or more additional conversion processes. The excess water may be circulated from a high-pressure complete carbon monoxide conversion process first to a complete carbon monoxide conversion process operating at a lower or atmospheric pressure and secondly to a partial carbon monoxide conversion process operating at atmospheric pressure and then returned to the original high pressure complete carbon monoxide conversion process. Additional carbon monoxide conversion processes specified are the conversion of carbon monoxide in coal gas for ammonia and high-pressure benzene synthesis (complete conversion) and for alcohol and Fischer-Tropsch benzene synthesis (partial conversion). |
