Polymer hydrosols are prepared by graft polymerization in aqueous emulsion of (1) 15 to less than 60 per cent of a protein, hydrolysed protein, or an oxidized and/or acylated protein; and (2) from 85 to more than 40 per cent of a monomer selected from given lists comprising vinyl esters (including vinyl chloride), acrylonitrile, substituted acrylonitriles, styrene, substituted styrenes and alkyl acrylates wherein the alkyl group contains from 4 to 10 carbon atoms. The protein material may be high or low grade and specified are hydrolysed gelatin, gelatin, glue, casein, soybean protein, oxidized casein, and acyl derivatives such as succinyl, phthalyl and acetyl proteins, e.g. the succinyl, phthalyl and acetyl derivatives of glue, gelatin and casein. Polymerization may be batchwise or continuous, optionally in the presence of the surface active agents and catalysts specified in the parent Specification and its patent of addition Specification 807,894. The examples illustrate the addition during the reaction of various ingredients. The products give water-insoluble layers, e.g. on conventional supports such as polyester and cellulose ester films, and thus find application in photography as gelatin substitutes or extenders, e.g. mixed with gelatin, degraded gelatin or other proteins. Specifications 648,927 and 649,544 [both in Group IV (b)], are referred to.
