Users U1 hold accounts with a plurality of different banks 2a, 2b. A payment authorisation request results from an order placed by the user U1 via an online merchant system 1a-c. The invention relates to a method of processing the payment authorisation request by conducting an account identification procedure to allow the user to specify a particular bank and associated account. The account identification procedure comprises identifying, from the plurality of different banks, a bank associated with user and retrieving bank transmission data on the basis the identification. An account identification request is transmitted on the basis of the transmission data, and a response to the request is received which identifies an account capable of being used in a payment transaction with the online merchant system. A method of authorising payment transactions is also disclosed, where a primary account number (PAN) is retrieved in response to received verified authentication details, the PAN is then transmitted to a merchant internet payment service provider (IPSP) system. |
