PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a sufficient manufacturing cost reduction effect and to eliminate false recognition by a user by, when filling of the waste toner container is detected, keeping an image forming apparatus in a non-print state until a waste toner container is replaced. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus includes an image forming section, a discharge port for discharging waste toner, the waste toner container having an opening, a photosensor having a light emitting section and light receiving section arranged so as to grip the opening, a light shielding member projecting so as to cover a light receiving surface of the light receiving section in a non-mounted state, a storing section 93 for storing a first threshold for detecting the filling of the waste toner container and a second threshold for detecting the retreat or projection of the light shielding member in relation to output voltage of the light receiving section, and a control section for receiving the output voltage of the light receiving section 72. When the filling of the waste toner container is detected, the projection of the light shielding member is detected, then the retreat of the light shielding member is detected, and the printing is interrupted or is not started until non-filling of the waste toner container is detected.
