<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk device in which an amount of use of an alternative sector is reduced. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When data writing in a data sector by a read/write processing unit 151 fails, an alternative processing unit 152 determines that the data sector is a defective sector, and writes data in an alternative sector. A writeback processing unit 153 writes the data stored in the alternative sector in the original data sector determined to be the defective sector. When the writing succeeds, the writeback processing unit 153 releases the alternative sector. The writing-back allows use of the data sector determined to be defective due to a temporary defect or failure. Releasing the alternative sector used in place of the defective sector reduces the amount of use of the alternative sector.
