PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling an operation of a portable terminal using a different touch zone are provided to control the operation of a portable terminal by recognizing a continuous input between a touch screen and a touch pad as a gesture input. CONSTITUTION: A GUI(Graphic User Interface)(110) includes a touch region receiving continuous contact from a neighboring different touch zone, and a PUI(Physical User Interface)(120) is adjacent to the touch region of the GUI and is connected in symmetrical structure. In addition, PUI includes a touch region for receiving the continuous input from the touch region of the GUI.
