<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic drive device for a construction machine capable of preventing the abrupt generation of a drive load of a hydraulic pump and preventing the lowering of the rotational speed of an engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The hydraulic drive device for the construction machine includes a hydraulic drive circuit including the hydraulic pump 14 driven by the engine 12 and a hydraulic cylinder 16 in which oil discharged from the hydraulic pump 14 is supplied. A stroke sensor 21 is attached to at least one of the hydraulic cylinder 16 being a single or a plurality of hydraulic actuators, and the stroke sensor 21 is connected with a controller 22 for driving and controlling the hydraulic pump 14. The controller 22 controls a quantity of the state of absorption torque or the like related to the drive load of the hydraulic pump 14 to be reduced within a range for maintaining the operation of the hydraulic cylinder 16 when the hydraulic cylinder 16 reaches a section near a stroke end.
