PURPOSE: An air conditioner and an operation method thereof are provided to uniformly maintain indoor temperature by controlling the compression rate of a refrigerant. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner comprises an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit comprises one or more compressors(151), temperature sensors(10), an outdoor temperature sensor(130), a hot gas control valve, and a controller(110). The temperature sensors are installed in a refrigerant inlet and a refrigerant outlet of the compressors and measure the temperature of a refrigerant pipe. The outdoor temperature sensor senses outdoor temperature. The hot gas control valve bypasses a refrigerant discharged from the compressor to the refrigerant inlet of the compressor. The controller calculates overheating degree and controls the compression rate of the compressors.
