A communication device for an electromagnetic telemetry system (30) for use in a well is adapted to be attached to a conductive pipe (3) of the well and includes at least one transmitter unit (6) for emitting a modulated electrical current in the pipe and at least one receiver unit (6') for receiving the modulated electrical current transmitted in the pipe, the transmitter unit and the receiver unit each comprising an antenna (10) with a magnetic core (13) and a winding (2) around the magnetic core, wherein the antenna is oriented such that the magnetic moment of the winding is tangential to the cross-section of the pipe (3) for respectively emitting and receiving the modulated electrical current.
