The present invention relates to an improved operating of industrial automation systems, in particular, to providing of operation data in industrial automation systems required for operating a device of an industrial automation system. In particular, a querying mechanism is established in devices of an automation system, by use of which queries for obtaining operation data are processed and by use of which at least one data providing device in said automation system, capable of providing the desired operation data, is determined. The present invention enables a flexible and cost-saving operating of industrial automation systems and allows a flexible execution of control mechanisms configured for controlling the industrial automation systems.
