PURPOSE: An apparatus for processing an image based on a region of interest and a method thereof are provided to generate an image including plural tonal distributions from a high dynamic range image. CONSTITUTION: An interest region setting unit(110) sets up at least one interest regions for an inputted image, and a dynamic range processing unit(120) analyzes a dynamic range for each interest region of the image. Based on the dynamic range of a display device to which an image is outputted and the dynamic range for the analyzed interest region, the dynamic range processing unit processes the dynamic range of the image adaptively. The interest region setup unit splits the inputted image into at least segment.
