PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce toner consumption and image quality adjustment time in an image forming apparatus configured to calibrate an optical sensor based on a detection value of a gray-scale pattern composed of formed toner patches by changing, when the calibration of the optical sensor is not needed, the number of gray-scale patterns to be formed. SOLUTION: The image density control device is configured, for determining an imaging condition, to detect a gray-scale pattern composed of a plurality of toner patches different in amount of adhesion continuously formed on a detection object by an optical detection means disposed in a position facing the detection object surface, perform calibration of the optical detection means based on the value of output voltage of the optical detection means obtained from the detection result, and calculate the amount of toner adhesion from the calculation result. The imaging condition of the gray-scale pattern is variable. The image density control device includes a toner patch quantity change means which changes the number of toner patches constituting the gray-scale pattern when it is determined that the calibration of the optical detection means is not needed.
