PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining the cross section of a flexible beam while efficiently extracting the cross section of the flexible beam having reduced layer-layer shearing stress, and to provide the flexible beam. SOLUTION: The flexible beam 10 is formed of a fiber reinforced composite material. It has a hub side connection portion 10a, a blade side connection portion 10b to which a rotor blade 13 is fixed via a member allowing feathering motion and lead and lug motion, and an optimized flexible portion 10c ranging between the hub side connection portion 10a and the blade side connection portion 10b. The cross section of an optimized cross section part perpendicular to a feathering axis 17 satisfies predetermined designing conditions, forms inclined faces at both cross ends parallel to a X-axis in a X-Y orthogonal coordinate system with the feathering axis 17 as an original point, and determines that the layer-layer shearing stressτyz generated on the face perpendicular to a Y-axis including the feathering axis 17 satisfies an allowable value for the material when bending moment is operated on the flexible beam with flapping motion.
