<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a compact optical module with an LD, which includes a function to capture monitoring light. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This optical module includes a PD and an LD for monitoring. As for the LD, a horizontal resonator surface emitting laser surface-emits horizontally resonated laser beams on a taper surface with a lens to accumulate laser on an outgoing side. The lens is formed in a position, where the center of the lens is slightly shifted from the optical axis of reflection light from the taper surface. Therefore, the reflection light from the end surface of the lens is captured from the lower part of the laser, and the PD is disposed almost directly under the lens of the LD or is sometimes disposed on part of the LD.
