PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an "onboard navigation apparatus" which enables searching of a suitable guide path when the map data around destination is not so detailed. SOLUTION: The onboard navigation apparatus includes: a display means; a first memory means with simplified map data stored; a second memory means with detailed map data stored; an information input means; and a control means which uses the simplified map data stored in the first memory means to search the route from the owner-driven car position to the destination, and also displays the message prompting download of the detailed map data around the destination on the screen of the above display means when the route-searching termination point is away from the destination farther than predefined distance. The control means will download detailed map data for the specified range around the destination to the first memory means and then search the guide path to the destination again, if being instructed to acquire the detailed map data around the destination from the second memory means.
