摘要 <p>A control pattern adapted to an ultra high expansion cycle is carried out to adjust the ignition timing SA to a steady adapted timing SAt so that the actual intake valve open timing IVCa may match a steady adapted value IVCt and so that the actual mechanical compression ratio ema may match the steady adapted value emt. Four cases may occur: the cases where IVCa shifts toward the lagged or advanced angle timing with respect to the IVCt because of, e.g., the response delay of a variable intake valve timing device and the cases where ema shifts toward a larger or smaller one with respect to emt because of, e.g., the response delay of a variable compression ration mechanism. There are two countermeasures against the four cases: "returning the actual compression ratio eca to the steady adapted value ect by performing intake valve open timing correction or mechanical compression ratio correction" and "performing ignition timing correction while keeping the shift of eca from ect". In one example, either of the two countermeasures against the four cases is selected in view of selection of "the pattern leading to the best fuel consumption while giving the highest priority to ensuring the output torque commanded by the driver" thereamong.</p>
