PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nanorod formulation for liquid crystal display for a polarization control-type electro-optical apparatus that has a wide angle of visual field and a sufficient contrast ratio, and shows decrease in threshold voltage for starting operation of the apparatus and a quick response to an applied voltage. SOLUTION: The nanorod formulation for liquid crystal display includes (A) a nematic liquid crystal (as a host), and (B) a nanorod of zinc sulfide or zinc oxide coated by a flowable organic surfactant (as a dopant) having a domain-like structure, wherein each nanorod in the domain range is arranged in a parallel condition and the content of the constituent (B) is desirably 0.1-0.4 mg per 1 ml of the constituent (A).
