PURPOSE: An ion generating apparatus, and a controlling method thereof are provided to reduce unnecessary operations of the apparatus by secluding a power source applied to an electrode unit when a power source malfunction occurs. CONSTITUTION: An ion generating apparatus comprises the following: plural electrode units generating cations and anions; a power controlling unit(400) secluding the power of the electrode units generating the cations; a display unit(130) displaying the secluding state of the electrode units; and a power cut circuit unit for controlling the DC power supply supplied to the electrode units generating the cations. The power controlling unit outputs a power shut down signal to a power cut circuit unit if the voltage applied to the electrode units is smaller than the reference voltage.
