<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To synchronize a recording/reproducing frequency accurately to a medium even when a recording head and a reproducing head are positioned at different zones in the vicinity of a zone partitioning position in a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus mounting a patterned medium on which a recording bit pattern is formed and having a zone format. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the recording head is positioned on a recording track in the vicinity of the zone partitioning position with the recording track as shown in Fig.4 and the recording head and reproducing head stay in the different zones, a recording start timing is determined by reproducing a preamble pattern at the reproducing head position, determining the recording frequency to record on a desired track by correcting the difference of preamble pattern frequencies between the zones, and then using a sync pattern obtained at the reproducing head as the basis.
