A semi-automatic feeding arrangement comprises means 11 to support a plurality of lengths of sheet material, a pair of power driven feed rolls 18, 19 through which the lengths are fed while being laid up into a pile 25, and means 26 associated with the rolls 18, 19 and responsive to a slackening or tautening of the tension in the pile 25 to respectively stop or start the rolls 18, 19. As shown, six rolls 12, .. 17 of textile fabric are rotatably supported on a trolley 11 either on spindles passing through the rolls or, for example rolls 13, 17, by being laid in boxes each containing small rollers. Alternatively rolls, bolts or loose lengths of fabric are accommodated in bins on the trolley. Fig. 3 (not shown). The rolls 18, 19 form the fabric into a pile and it passes through a power press 21 to a table 24 having a sliding top faced with a material sufficiently strong to withstand the pressure of a cutting tool but resilient to prevent damage to the cutting edges of the tool. In operation, fabric is passed between the rolls 18, 19 opened by a handle 20 and between the open platens 22, 23 of the press 21 after which the rolls 18, 19 are closed. The operator stands by the table 24 and pulls the pile 25 taut to raise an arm 26 which actuates a switch to drive the feed rolls 18, 19 by a motor 27. The rolls 18, 19 feed the pile towards the press 21 whilst the operator only exerts sufficient pull to hold the pile taut. When the pile has reached the end of the table 24, the operator allows the pile to sag to cause the switch 26 to drop and stop the rolls 18, 19. Forme or strip steel cutters are placed on the pile on the table 24 and the table top is pushed into the press 21 which is then closed. The press 21 is opened, the table top withdrawn and the cut fabric separated from the waste fabric. The operation is then repeated. A transverse cutter- (not shown) may be fixed to the end of the table 24 to cut the waste fabric from the pile. A tray 34 may be provided on the trolley 11 into which the sagging fabric may droop during cutting. In a modification (not shown), the trolley 11 is replaced by a smooth topped table for carrying sheets of fabric and which is mounted on castors. |
