<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoresistive head of a CPP structure, producing small reading blur and having excellent stability of a reproduction characteristic. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetoresistive head having the CPP structure includes a magnetoresistive sensor film 20 disposed between a lower shielding layer 11 and an upper shielding layer, with a longitudinal bias application layer 23 provided on both sides of the sensor film 20, by the intermediary of an insulating film 22 in the track width direction. The length 112 of the longitudinal bias application layer 23 in the element height direction is set longer than the length 111 of the element height direction of a second ferromagnetic layer 16 being one of the layers constituting the magnetoresistive sensor film 20, and having rotating magnetization relative to an external magnetic field. The film surface of the longitudinal bias application layer 23 has a level difference in the element height direction, and the film thickness of the longitudinal bias application layer 23 varies in correspondence with the level difference.
