<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that it is necessary to find out a novel solvent for enhancing solubility of a lipophilic active component and, in particular, a lipophilic screening agent in an oil or in a carrier of a cosmetic or a dermatological formulation containing the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The use of at least one ester derived from 4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidinone of formula (I) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a linear or branched 1-20C alkyl group; and R<SP>2</SP>is a linear or branched 1-20C alkyl group optionally bearing a 5-6C ring, a phenyl group, a benzyl group or a phenethyl group), as a solvent, in a composition containing at least one liquid fat phase and at least one lipophilic active component in a medium acceptable for cosmetics, for the active component in the liquid fat phase and/or as an improving agent for solubility of the active component in a solid layer is provided. A composition, which includes at least one liquid fat phase composed of at least one ester derived from 4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidinone of formula (I) and at least one lipophilic active component in a medium acceptable for cosmetics, is also provided.
