PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonitrided member which can secure excellent wear resistance and high pitting strength even if the content of expensive Mo is reduced, or Mo is not added. SOLUTION: In the carbonitrided member, the steel of the base material contains, by mass, 0.10 to 0.35% C, 0.15 to 1.0% Si, 0.30 to 1.0% Mn, 0.40 to 2.0% Cr and≤0.05% S, and the balance Fe with impurities, wherein the iron nitride grains ofε-Fe<SB>3</SB>N and/orζ-Fe<SB>2</SB>N are dispersed into a region to the position of an effective hardening depth from the surface of the hardened layer, and also, retained austenite is decomposed into bainitic ferrite, Fe<SB>3</SB>C andα''-Fe<SB>16</SB>N<SB>2</SB>.
