<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep an appropriate output balance adjustment value by rapidly coping with dust abruptly adhering to one of pixel surfaces of a first photoelectric conversion element group. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the case of an instruction to read one surface (front surface) of a document 110, in other words, in transporting the document 110 other than the purpose of using a CIS 28A, a part of the other surface (back surface) of the document 110 is read by the CIS 28A. A partial region read by the CIS 28A is a region predicted to be high in a probability of being a white part, and is, for instance, a front end of the document (or a rear end part thereof). That is, a probability that nothing is described at the periphery of a non-read surface of the document 110 for which one-side reading is instructed is high. By using data of the region of a uniform concentration in the main scanning direction, a preset shading adjustment value is compensated, and read data irregularity caused by dust abruptly adhering to or moving on the reading surface of the CIS 28A is prevented.
