The system has an exhaust line (2) provided with an oxidation catalyst (9), a reduction catalyst (11) provided downstream the oxidation catalyst and an electronic control unit (12). The oxidation catalyst includes 0.03 grams of platinum per liter of catalyst, and the electronic control unit includes a regulation unit (13) for increasing the temperature of the reduction catalyst. The oxidation catalyst selectively oxidizes carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, where the oxidation catalyst is palladium or gold catalyst. An independent claim is also included for a method for processing exhaust gas emitted by an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
