The device (10) has an optical module comprising an LED (11) arranged on a metallic isolated substrate (12) between the substrate and a partially transparent upper wall (13). A temporary impermeable protective envelope (15) indirectly rejoins the upper wall and the substrate on periphery of the optical module and temporarily seals the LED. A permanent and non-demountable impermeable protective envelope (16) is arranged on the temporary envelope on entire periphery of the optical module and on the height between the substrate and the upper wall and permanently protects the LED. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing an LED based lighting device for wetland lighting.
