<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control excess reactivity at the beginning of an operation cycle, curb reactivity loss at the end of it and also increase plutonium inventory per fuel assembly. Ž<P>SOLUTION: MOX fuel rods 11, 12, 13 and 14 containing gadolinia with the concentration of ≤0.3 wt.% and a mixed oxide of uranium and plutonium are included in fuel rods bundled like a lattice in a fuel assembly 10. The concentration of the gadolinia contained in the MOX fuel rods 11, 12, 13 and 14 is a very small quantity in comparison with a high concentration, for example 2 wt.%, of the gadolinia included in high concentration enriched uranium fuel rods 15 so as to control the reactivity mainly during an operation cycle.
