<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which reads and computerizes a document including a portion drawn with a paint, that becomes colorless by being heated, and automatically erases the portion drawn with the paint after it is confirmed that reading and computerizing operations are normally performed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The document fed by an automatic document feeder 20 is read at a reading position F by a reader 12, its image is stored in a storage section and feeding of the document is then stopped temporarily. The stored image is displayed on a display section and an approval to the image is received from a user. When the image is approved, feeding of the document after reading is resumed and the document is passed through a switch-back route 28 and ejected through a heating position H into an eject tray 23. In such a case, the document passing the heating position H is heated to a temperature, at which paint that becomes colorless by heating, becomes colorless by a heater 25 and the paint is made colorless.
