<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively detect a travel distance of conveyed paper in a direction perpendicular to a conveying direction or a rate of inclination of the conveyed paper in saved space by scanning light output from a light emitting section in the direction perpendicular to the paper conveying direction without scanning the output element itself of the light emitting section in the direction perpendicular to the paper conveying direction. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A paper conveyance device includes: the light emitting section 1 emitting light having directivity; a light receiving section 5 converting the light into an electric signal; a light scanning mechanism 2 arranged between the light emitting section 1 and a member reflecting or transmitting or absorbing the light, and scanning the light output from the light emitting section 1 in the direction perpendicular to the paper conveying direction; and an evaluation section 8 scanning paper conveyed by the light scanning mechanism 2, receiving reflected light obtained by scanning by the light receiving section 5 and detecting the travel distance of the paper from the reflected light of the paper and the reflected light of the paper outside of a conveyance section.
