PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently manufacturing a high quality photonic crystal fiber. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing a photonic crystal fiber comprises following processes: filling a solid rod and a plurality of capillaries sealed of their one ends in a support tube; heating the capillaries from their open ends to 20 mm or above thereof with a heater up to the temperature at which the preform (the capillaries and support tube) is softened and deformed; exhausting air inside the support tube from one end side thereof with a vacuum exhausting apparatus; feeding a gas for adjusting pressure difference from the other end side of the support tube; unifying the preform at a part of the capillaries; dividing the space inside the tube into a space I of gaps between the mutual capillaries or between the capillary and the support tube, and a space II inside the capillaries; slowly moving the heating zone toward the sealed side of the capillaries; manufacturing the preform unified through full length in the longitudinal direction; spinning this preform while regulating pressure inside the voids; making into a strand to obtain the photonic crystal fiber.
