PURPOSE: A shift control system and a method for an automatic transmission are provided to prevent collision in a control process of power transmission and improve the response property of a deceleration direct control by applying the hydraulic pressure value of a down displacement before the stop of a vehicle as a compensation value for the deceleration direct control. CONSTITUTION: An engine revolutions per minute(RPM) detector(101) detects engine RPM. A turbine RPM detector(102) detects turbine RPM which is connected with the input shaft of a transmission. An acceleration pedal detector(103) detects the displacement of an acceleration pedal. A controller(104) performs a deceleration direct control. An actuator(105) operates a hydraulic pressure which supplies to a combination side element and a release side element.
