<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophotographic method capable of correctly setting a potential even when the sensitivity of a photoreceptor changes with repetition of the electrophotographic process and exceeds a controllable range of the light power in an image exposure light source. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the electrophotographic method, when the surface potential of a photoreceptor at a position of a developing device used in a developing step when an image exposure step is not carried out after a charging process is defined as V0 potential, among potentials used for the grayscale range for image formation, the maximum potential in an absolute value is defined as VD potential and the minimum potential in an absolute value is defined VL potential, the VD potential is generated by irradiating the photoreceptor with predetermined exposure quantity in the image exposure step. When the exposure quantity for generating the VD potential is defined as VD exposure quantity and the exposure quantity for generating the VL potential is defined as VL exposure quantity, in the case that the VL exposure quantity decreases less than a reference value (NO in S3), the absolute value of the V0 potential is increased (S5) as well as the VD exposure quantity is increased (S4).
