A bearing fulfils the function of guiding the shaft (1), while at least one hydrostatic support device (30) is located close to the bearing in order to withstand most of the loads exerted permanently by the shaft on the guiding and support assembly. The support device comprises a casing (32) open on the side located towards the shaft and connected to a source of pressurised hydraulic fluid, an annular friction element (34) connected to the casing, around the opening in the latter, in a way which is sealed against the hydraulic fluid, the friction element being capable of moving with respect to the casing in a direction normal to the surface of the supported shaft and being applied against the shaft by the pressurised hydraulic fluid let into the casing and acting on one surface of the friction element, and a laminated element (42) comprising alternating layers of elastically deformable material and of metal adhering to one another, which is interposed between the casing and a support base of the hydrostatic support device so that the hydraulic fluid let into the casing fulfils a supporting function by acting directly on that part of the surface of the shaft defined by the annular friction element, and a sealing function by applying the annular friction element to the shaft, and so that the support device is capable of following variations in the position of the axis of the shaft. <IMAGE> |
