PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a highly pure imidazole compound required for an organic EL element exhibiting a specifically short wave luminescence, showing a high luminescent efficiency and having a long luminescent life, the imidazole compound produced by the above method, and the organic EL element, an illuminating device and a displaying device by using the same. SOLUTION: This method for producing imidazophenanthridine as a typical example, is characterized by reacting a phenanthridine amine compound with a ketone compound in a non-polar aprotic solvent.
