PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a locking device for a sliding door which, even when mounted on a sliding door, is not unsightly, is very easy to operate, and has a simple structure. SOLUTION: A rear end of a lock bolt 5 held within a case 2 and a rear end of an operating member 3 are connected to each other at right angle in planar view. This connection is performed by projecting and engaging a protrusion provided at both ends of the rear part of the lock bolt 5 into inclined grooves formed at opposed faces of an arm part provided backward from upper and lower sites in the rear part of the operating member 3. When the operating member 3 is pushed forward by a spring to allow its front part to be located at a position substantially moved outside an opening 2e in the case 2, the lock bolt 5 is substantially protruded outward through an opening 2f provided at a back plate 2b in the case 2. When the operating member 3 is deeply depressed, the lock bolt 5 enters the case 2 to have the operating member 3 temporarily stopped at this position.
