In a rotary-drum washing machine in which the direction of drum rotation is continually reversed during washing, transition from washing to spin-drying speeds takes place without change of direction when the laundry has just unwound and has not started to wind itself up in the reverse direction. Typically the transition takes place four seconds after the beginning of a period of rotation in the eventual sense of the spin-drying: In Fig. 3, a motor 2 drives two cams 5, 7 on a shaft 6, cam 5 controlling drum reversal during washing when the drum is driven by a motor 3. A motor 4 is used for spin-drying. For washing and rinsing, a switch 1 is closed to contact 1a to energize motors 2, 3. When the water has been emptied out, switch 1 is closed to contact 1b and motors 2, 3 continue to be energized through closed contact 8a of a switch 8 controlled by cam 7, until the cam follower meets a notch 7a in cam 7. Then switch 8 is closed to contact 8b, motors 2, 3 are de-energized and motor 4 energized. The motors 3, 4 may be replaced by a two-speed motor, or by a simplespeed motor together with a gear-box controlled by cam 7. |
