PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hot dip galvanized steel sheet which satisfies all of powdering properties and slidability upon press working, and image clarity and spot weldability after coating, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The hot dip galvanized steel sheet has a Zn-Fe alloy layer obtained by performing alloying treatment after being subjected to hot dip galvanizing treatment. The surface layer of the plating layer in the steel sheet comprises a zinc η phase in a coating weight of 10 to 50 mass%, and in which skewness S of a cross-sectional curve amplitude probability density distribution in the surface of the plated steel sheet shown by formula ; S=μ<SB>3</SB>/σ<SP>3</SP>(wherein, μ<SB>3</SB>denotes the three-dimensional moment of the amplitude probability density; and σdenotes the standard deviation of the amplitude probability density) is -1.5 to 0.
