PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of determining the current utility of words dependent on a current language material and learner's current and changing knowledge state. SOLUTION: A computer-implemented vocabulary learning method is provided wherein a text comprises a plurality of words. The method includes: an assignment step of assigning, for each of at least some of the words in the text, a status to the word in dependence upon first, second and third measures for the word; and a communication step of communicating the assigned status to the learner at least if requested. The assigned status is selected from a plurality of predetermined statuses. Each status is associated with at least one corresponding recommended action to be taken by the learner.
