<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting defective liquid separation in an extraction column, having such excellent characteristics as being able to easily and efficiently detect defective liquid separation in the extraction column, thereby always being able to carry out liquid-liquid extraction operation in a good condition, and to provide a method of operating the extraction column. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method of detecting defective liquid separation in the extraction column, the flow rate of a liquid is continuously watched at the outlet of the extraction column to detect the occurrence of defective liquid separation in the extraction column according to a change in the flow rate. In the method of operating the extraction column continuously run by automatic control, a control system has a means for continuously watching the state of liquid separation in the extraction column, an operation of correcting defective liquid separation is carried out automatically or by an operator if the means detects the defective liquid separation, and the above detection method is employed.
