A high speed aircraft has a region over which the air flows terminated abruptly rearwardly in relation to the free stream direction or line of flight by an angularly edged junction with a rearwardly facing cliff or step, the edge being swept relative to the free stream direction and the angle of the junction and the depth of the cliff or step below the edge being such that air flowing over the edge becomes separated from the aircraft. In the embodiment shown applied to the upper surface of a wing W wherein the airflow is indicated by arrow X, a step is shown having a riser 10 perpendicular to the wing surface ahead of the step and swept at an angle S to the normal to the direction of free air-flow. Holes 15a, 15b and 15c are provided in the step and in the wing surface aft of the step, such holes being connected by pipes 16a, 16b and 16c to a plant 17 for blowing or sucking air, to influence the air flow over the edge 11. Other embodiments are described applied to swept and delta wing aircraft wherein the surface aft of the position of maximum thickness is formed into a plurality of stepped wedge formations. In another embodiment the steps are formed by the sides of an engine nacelle and an arrangement is described wherein the aft end of an engine nacelle is formed with circumferentially spaced stepped wedge portions
