The method involves extracting image characteristics from structures e.g. spinal column (3), pelvis bone, lung tissues and function organs such as heart and liver, of an examining object (1) based on image data acquired by a tomography system. A conclusion on a position of the examining object is derived from the position of the image characteristics in an imaging area through utilizing an automatic recognition logic. An image focal point is determined by formation of a contrast-average value over pixels or Voxel of the imaging area. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for detecting a position of an examining object in a tomography system (2) a computer program product stored in a programmable image processing system, having a set of instructions for executing a method for detecting position of an examining object in a tomography system.
