<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a disk to be used even when a sensor for determining the number of disk layers is broken. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An output signal of a sensor changes depending on presence of a determination hole. The output signal of the sensor is read to determine the number of layers (S3). Irrespective of a disk inserted due to a failure of the sensor, any disk is determined as a double-layer disk, and parameters are set for the double-layer disk. whether a focus servo and a tracking servo are locked or not is determined in S8. When not locked, parameters are set for a single-layer disk and whether the servo is locked or not is determined in S24. When locked, whether the disk is a single-layer disk or not is determined based on information read from the disk in S25.
