The present invention relates to a data storage system (100). A data storage system (100) according to the invention comprises a shared memory (110) that stores file system data and a processor (102) that is adapted to perform control functions and file system management functions using file system data stored in the shared memory (110). A data storage system (100) according to the invention further comprises a packet arbiter (124) that receives data from a source external to the data storage system (100) and an I/O scheduler (122) that schedules I/O operations on the data received by the packet arbiter (124) using file system data stored in the shared memory (110) autonomously with respect to the processor (102).
