PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing obovatol and derivative thereof is provided to enhance AMPK(AMP-activated protein kinase) activation and to treat diabetes and metabolic disorder. CONSTITUTION: A health food for preventing or treating diabetes contains obovatol of chemical formula 1 and derivative thereof as active ingredient. In chemical formula 1, R1 and R2 are independently or selectively hydrogen, straight chain or side chain alkyl of C1-C7, acetyl, alkoxy of C1-C7, or alkoxyacetyl of C1-C7. The food additionally contains phemaceutically acceptable excipeint. The obovatol is obtained by isolating and purifying from Magnolia obovata Thunberg.
