<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium of high reliability, which has a recording layer formed with concave and convex patterns and hardly causes variations to the magnetic characteristics of the recording layer. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 10 has: a substrate; a recording layer 14 which is formed with prescribed concave and convex patterns on the substrate, the convex parts of the concave and convex patterns constituting recording elements 14A; and a filling part 18 which fills the concave parts 16 between the recording elements 14A. The filling part 18 includes a main filling material made of a metallic material and nitrogen, and the nitrogen is biasedly distributed in the filling part 18 so that the ratio of the number of the nitrogen atoms to the total sum of the number of the atoms of the main filling material and the number of the nitrogen atoms in the upper surface part 18A of the filling part 18 may be higher than that in the lower part 18B of the filling part 18.
