<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for treating an organic waste capable of attaining the reduction of nitrogen contamination of soil or ground water employing a simple configuration by reducing the emission of nitrous oxide having a high warming potential into atmospheric air and by further reducing the nitrogen content in a methane fermentation liquid. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The system includes a nitrification tank for nitrifying the fermentation liquid produced in a methane fermentation tank, a denitrification tank for denitrifying a liquid treated in the nitrification tank, a fermentation liquid delivery line for delivering the fermentation liquid from the methane fermentation tank to the denitrification tank, an aerobic state developing device for supplying oxygen to the nitrification tank, a first sensor for measuring an oxidation-reduction potential of the liquid treated in the denitrification tank, a second sensor for measuring the pH value of the liquid treated in the denitrification tank, and a controller for controlling the amount of the fermentation liquid to be delivered from the methane fermentation tank to the denitrification tank and the amount of the oxygen to be supplied to the nitrification tank from the result of the measurement by the first and the second sensor.
